ANU Schools Championship

The 2010 ANU Chess Festival finished up today with the ANU High School and College Championship. Yesterday saw the ANU Primary Schools Championship and once again both events attracted an eclectic mix of teams.
Both events saw a tie for first place and amazingly the scores of the top 3 teams was identical in both events. In the Primary section Radford Red Raiders edged out Curtin Archers on head-to-head results after they both finished on 20.5/28. In third place was Arawang People on 19.5. In the High School/College section Canberra College had a better tie break than Alfred Deakin Pwn Passant after they also tied on 20.5/28. The Radford Fighting Apples picked up the third place trophy scoring 19.5
In the High Schools section the teams were a mix of serious players, enthusiastic new comers and kids just enjoying a day off school. New participants Lake Ginninderra College were the most impressive school, in terms of attitude at least, providing 3 teams who came dressed for the part, right down to the war paint. Typifying this attitude was Andrew Brown who in his chess career has collected a couple of Grandmaster scalps and an IM norm at the 2009 Queenstown Classic. Today however he was happy to hold down board 1 for his school team, going up against players who's chess ambitions extend no further than the lunchtime chess club.
